Welcome to Ingredient Breakdown, a new blog segment in which we try to explain in plain English those hard to pronounce ingredients that are commonly found in skincare products. Our objective is to show you that just because some active components have odd names, that doesn’t mean they are necessarily bad for you. Some are, so watch out for our recommendation at the end of every post, but a lot of them, especially the ones we use, aren’t.

For our very first instalment of this segment, we will be looking at biosaccharide gum 1.

Main effects:

What does it do?

This active ingredient is derived from sorbitol, commonly known as a sweetener. It helps with the binding process of skin and water, ie- it hydrates the skin. It is also said to have anti-inflammatory properties, helping cure skin irritations. It can frequently be seen in the ingredient list of moisturisers, solar protector and other skin products.

How is it created?

biosaccharide gum 1 is a polysaccharide, which means it basically consists of a number of bound sugar mollecules, that is generated from fermenting sorbitol. Sorbitol, in turn, is a sweet alcohol found naturally in some fruits.

As you can probably tell by now, despite its intimidating name, biosaccharide gum 1 can actually be created rather naturally. By extracting sorbitol from fruits such as apricots and peaches and then fermenting it, this gum can be extracted and used to keep you young.

Can it have any negative side effects?

Not really. This ingredient has very low to none levels of toxicity, no occurrence of allergies has been registered, and due to its natural occurrence it is classified by ewg as extremely low in regards to the overall hazard.

Overall recommendation

In conclusion, this is a great ingredient to look out for in you’re in need of a hidrating and moisturizing product. If this component doesn’t feature in the ingredient list, xanthan gum is also a popular skincare component and has similar properties and is used in conjunction with biosaccharide gum 1 often.
